Your feet are similar to the foundation of your home – they support the entire structure. Problems with your feet can lead to problems throughout the body.
Take this quiz:
Do you stand or walk on hard surfaces for more than four hours daily?
Do you participate regularly in any physical sport?
Are you age 40 or over?
Have you had a prior injury to your knee, back or neck?
Do your shoes wear unevenly?
Do you have joint pain while standing, walking or running?
Do you have knock-knees or bow-legs?
Do you have obvious foot problems (bunions, corns, flat feet, etc.)?
Do your feet “toe out” when you’re walking?
Do you have any of these conditions?
FOOTNOTES
* Joint deterioration (osteoarthritis) is the leading cause of knee and hip replacement surgery. Stabilizing Orthotics from Foot Levelers can help prevent these conditions.
**According to the World Health Organization, more than 300 million people worldwide are overweight or obese. Along with other health complications associated with being overweight, such as heart disease and diabetes, the body and feet can also be negatively affected. Extra weight applies more pressure on the feet and can cause the arches to collapse, leading to joint and back pain.
How custom orthotics can help you
A properly aligned body has symmetrical feet and level knees, pelvis and shoulders. Custom orthotics are designed to help keep the bones in your feet, ankles, and knees in proper position. Orthotics do this through the resistance of the materials used and the angle and height of the various surfaces.
Wearing functional orthotics may also help:
Only Foot Levelers functional orthotics support all 3 arches of the foot, which make up the plantar vault. They’re custom-made by hand, based on your unique feet, body and health profile. Just as no two bodies are alike, no two pairs of Foot Levelers custom orthotics are alike.
Over-the-counter orthotics may initially cost less, but they support only one arch in your foot. When only one arch is supported, it may not maintain the structure of your plantar vault, and problems can arise in other parts of your body. Indeed, “over-supporting” just one arch of the foot may actually cause pain and symptoms, not relieve them.
Feet are the foundation of the body
Foot imbalance or dysfunction can have ripple effects, transferring imbalance (and pain) to the ankles, legs, knees, hips, spine, shoulders, even the skull. Foot Levelers orthotics are custom-built to balance and support your unique feet and body, and to suit the demands of your individual lifestyle and activities. By balancing and supporting the feet, they help balance and support the spine, which can help relieve pain and improve your body’s overall biomechanics.
Orthotics offer quality-of-life improvement for anyone – young, old, athletic or otherwise. They can help improve pain, posture, balance and physical performance in all aspects of life. They can help prevent or treat low back pain, hip pain, knee pain and neck pain, and are one of the best ways to deal with foot conditions such as bunions, heel spurs and plantar fasciitis.
Stabilizing Orthotics support all three arches of the foot to help align the feet, ankles, knees, hips and spine to provide a balanced foundation for the body. The individually designed postural support also helps to reduce back and joint pain. Orthotics are an important adjunct to your care because they help your adjustments hold longer, helping prolong wellness.
Over-the-counter orthotics offer initial comfort and visual appeal—super soft, fancy blue gel, etc.—but they are not necessarily beneficial or lasting. Foot Levelers crafts custom-made orthotics based on scans made by a high-tech 3D scanner with pinpoint accuracy to protect you, not the masses, using materials especially selected to suit your needs.
FAQ
Experienced technicians craft your orthotics based on 3D images. These images are produced using the 3D BodyView® imaging device, which uses the laser triangulation technique, one of the most accurate measurement techniques available. This helps ensure your orthotics fit perfectly to your feet.
Consult your healthcare professional and discuss what activities you will engage in while wearing your orthotics. Together, you can determine what’s best for you – the InMotion orthotic to suit your on-the-go lifestyle or the pumped-up XP3® to fit inside your athletic shoes and get you in the game.
Foot levellers functional orthotics are custom-made to help maintain your adjustments and keep you supported. Each type of orthotic—Premium, Intense, Moderate, etc.—is designed to provide an optimal amount of support for a particular activity, so wearing one type for multiple occasions can compromise their intended support and structural integrity. For instance, wearing a luxury top in your running shoes will not only wear down the material rapidly, since it wasn’t designed for that kind of activity, but it will also slip more easily because it is crafted using leather. That's why we recommend multiple pairs for your multiple shoes and activities.
Orthotics are crafted separately from your shoes, unless you’re investing in Shoethotics® or Sandalthotics®. Because all shoes are made differently, you may need to trim the toe end of the orthotic so that it matches the liner your shoe came with; otherwise, the orthotic may not fit properly. The best way to do this is to place the liner on top of the orthotic and trim any overlap off the orthotic. This way, the orthotic fits just as the liner did: perfectly inside the shoe.
It can take some time for a new pair of custom orthotics to conform to your feet and for your body to adjust to proper, healthy support. If you haven’t worn orthotics before, your feet need to adapt to the unique corrections to maintain the integrity of your plantar vault—the three arches in your feet that help keep your body in balance. If you don’t give it 45 days and follow the break-in procedures, you may not experience the full benefits of using orthotics.
Orthotics are guaranteed for an entire year but are built to last for two. Foot Levelers recommends a new pair every two years, but more active patients may require replacements more frequently.
Keep your orthotics dry (unless they are Aquaguard™ custom orthotics, designed specifically to withstand moisture). If your orthotics are too long for your shoes, don't worry: trim them carefully by using the original shoe liner as a stencil and cutting around it. Water damage and mis-trimmings are not covered by the warranty, so please be careful. Take them out of your shoes to “breathe” at the end of every day. It’s best to have multiple pairs of orthotics for support in every pair of shoe, and for every activity.
Statistics & Studies
"A custom orthotic puts your foot in an ideal position at every stage of walking, running and pivoting," said David A. Schofield, the president of the American Podiatric Medical Association, which represents more than 12,000 podiatrists. "You'll be at your most strong and at your maximum efficiency." Dr. Schofield recommends custom orthotics to 90 percent of his patients. And he is not alone.
Prescriptions for custom orthotics are becoming almost commonplace. Industrywide sales of specially made orthotic devices have risen at a rate of 12% annually in the last five years, reflecting both their effectiveness and growing demand. Baby boomers who participate in more strenuous sports than their forebears did in middle age don't want to be sidelined by foot pain. And custom orthotics can be combined with traditional remedies — like icing, rest and stretching – to excellent effect.
Several studies have shown beneficial effects of custom orthotics. A 1991 survey of 347 runners who used custom orthotics after suffering an injury found that 75% reported complete or near-complete recovery, and 90% continued to use their inserts after recovery. A more recent investigation in 2011 similarly found that custom orthotics reduced pain and were well-tolerated among most runners.
Foot Levelers has been providing quality orthotics for over six decades. The products are backed by nearly 40 clinical research studies – more than any other orthotic company in the world. Over 100,000 medical professionals and over a million users can attest to their effectiveness.
